  9. Yo,

    Spoiler
The magic cloud came to surround Sappo’s legs as he fell on all fours. Then, a giant fish-like fin grew out of the cloud, just as said cloud placed itself above Sappo’s head. “Prepare to be squashed!” as he finished his sentence, a ball of ice hurled itself from the cloud to Anolk’s position at amazing speed. The latter merely moved his head, letting the projectile crash on the ground behind him. Then, he jumped, evading a slightly bigger ice ball in the process. They’re getting bigger and faster…Anolk thought. Guess I have no choice. He unsheathed his Flytta, which took the shape of a crossbow. Just as a new ice ball appeared, a green, arrow-shaped Wind Bullet clashed against it, inflating it in place. Two more launched themselves at Anolk, but his eyes immediately darted towards them, and the rest of his body followed: every oncoming Ice Ball had inflated, turning the field into a strange display of blue-colored, shiny balloons.

“Are you planning to outgun Sappo, boy?” Sappo inquired. “Don’t think your puny magical stamina can match that of a Sir-Ranked Familiar! You will tire before Sappo!”

Anolk sheathed his Flytta, again, waiting for the next ice ball. “There are people I need to save, Sappo.” Anolk replied. “And for them, I have no time to tire!”

A giant ball of ice came out of Sappo’s cloud and reached for Anolk. With the smile worn by those who enjoy a plan well done, Anolk ran towards the projectile then leaped on the side, over the giant gap that separated him from Sappo. His feet fell on one of the balloon-like ice balls, which he used as a platform to propel himself further. Sappo’s eyes widened as Anolk quickly reached his spot, jumping across the battlefield with the various inflated platforms he had left specifically for that purpose. He drew his Flytta, which took the form of a knight-like lance as it stabbed Sappo. The signature green light of the Wind Ring shone on the weapon, then on Sappo’s body. He instantly inflated, unable to move, and stuck at the tip of Anolk’s weapon.

“Wahoo!” Anolk exclaimed with childish satisfaction.

“...Sappo is defeated,” Sappo admitted calmly, a hint of frustrated disappointment in his voice. A few seconds later, his body as engulfed in a bright light, to Anolk’s surprise. He delicately placed the shinning body on the ground and sheathed his Flytta, waiting to see what would come out. And eventually, a tiny tadpole emerged from the light, staring at Anolk with grumpy eyes.

    “What… What happened?!” Anolk inquired.

“Sappo… Sappo was only to keep his Sir Rank should Sappo succeed in his mission.” Sappo revealed bitterly. “And… Sappo failed. Sappo has already forgotten his master, and his mission. Sappo is nothing, now.”

Anolk clenched his fist. Sappo wasn’t evil. He clearly did nothing but follow his duty, and he was treated like another mindless Moo, stripped of his power, and any memory of anything related to his master – most likely so said master could protect himself.
That was evil. That was cruel. That was unforgivable.

    “Oi, Anolk!”

Anolk turned back, surprised to hear the familiar voice. As the thunderclouds above disappeared – these were certainly a spell used my Sappo, too – the sun’s light shone bright to reveal the shape of the Coo-Hatch. At its prow, the familiar figures of Havalpo and Valcoo appeared. When the ship came close enough, Anolk grabbed Sappo within his hand – to the poor tadpole’s confusion – and leaped towards the Coo-Hatch,, landing on its deck with ease.

“Welcome back, maggot.” Valcoo greeted him as she gazed at the broken ship Anolk left behind. “Anything to absorb, there?”

“I don’t think so.” Anolk said. “The entire ship is completely wrecked.”

“Mm. And you’ve got a tadpole in your hand because…?”

“Oh, that’s Sappo!” Anolk exclaimed. “He’s the Familiar I defeated! But… After the battle ended, he became a tadpole.” Anolk’s expression grew sour. “Apparently, he can’t keep his rank if he fails a mission.”

“Oh, right – and he doesn’t remember anything about his master, right?” Valcoo completed. “Yeah, it’s a pretty common trick.” she chuckled. “At least now we know it definitely comes from one of those jerks from Glyph Isle.” Valcoo nonchalantly walked closer to Anolk and knelt, gazing into the eyes of the confused Sappo. “What do you wanna do now, big guy?”

“Sappo… Sappo merely wishes to recover his strength.” Sappo said. “And, if possible, atone for his sin. Sappo did not wish to harm the girl he kept captive.”

“Oh, really?” Valcoo smirked. “Oï, rain cat! C’mere for a sec, will ya?”

“Y-Yes, Captain!” Derlassia exclaimed as she quickly ran to Valcoo’s side. “Is… Is there a problem?” she briefly looked at Anolk and slightly bowed her head in his direction.

“Yeah – a problem you can solve. See that tadpole? I’d rather eat it than keep it around my Coo-Hatch. So, here’s the deal: you take care of it, get revenge at it for being your captor or something, and you make sure it gets its Sir-Rank again. Got it?”

Derlassia blinked, then stared at Sappo, and back at Valcoo with utter confusion. “You… You want me to have my own familiar?”
    “Yup.”

“But… Why me? Um… Why me, Captain? Wouldn’t you prefer to have a Familiar of your own?”

“I work best alone. You, however, will probably need some constant support. And this guy,” she added, pointing at Anolk, “won’t always be there for ya. Helping others is kind of his thing.”

“And, apparently...” Shirlu intervened, a mischievous smile on the face, “It’s starting to become a habit of yours, Luna.”

“Can it, Gourmet.” Valcoo exclaimed as she raised up. “I’m still eating that stupid fish if she doesn’t want it.”

“Sappo would like to specify that he is, in fact, a frog!” Sappo intervened, incredulous. His gaze turned fearful once Valcoo directed her glare at him. “Which part of my sentence, fish, made you believe that I cared? Get your Sir-Rank again, and maybe I’ll change my mind.”

“I’ll take good care of him!” Derlassia quickly said, taking Sappo into her hands. “Thank you… Thank you for your gift. Um… Captain.”

“Mm. Havalpo, make us hit the road again, will ya? I’ll be in my room, so, let’s make sure our rookie rain cat gets used to my Coo-Hatch in the meantime. Anolk, any injuries?”

“Nothing I can’t handle, Captain!” Anolk exclaimed joyfully.

“Then we’re off. Anolk? Gourmet? Damage my Coo-Hatch again and I’m strangling ya.” with that said, Valcoo turned back and walked away, engulfing herself inside her personal cabin before closing the door.

1009 words. Meant to post this earlier, but this'll do. @looseleaf There's about an hour and a half left; although if you still don't make it, that's totally fine — #Life 's the most important part of the challenge, after all. Good luck with university work, yeah? Hope you'll manage.

How odd I can have all this inside me and to you it’s just words.
