I've been thinking about something as a writer: what makes a reader finish the first chapter of a book and immediately want to read the second?
Is it a mysterious opening that leaves you with questions? A character you instantly become curious about? An unexpected event? Or maybe an ending that makes it impossible to put the book down?
Personally, I think the first chapter has an important job: it should give readers a reason to care about what happens next without revealing too much too soon.
