GUYS. Is it just me or do people choose to smooth out their brains when it comes to Taylor Swift? Like, they say her lyrics don't make sense and they immediately call them bad but that's because they DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT SHES SAYING (or just because she's Taylor).
And to be fair, there has been a time where I didn't understand one of Taylor's lyrics, but you know what I did? I ACTUALLY SEARCHED IT UP AND TRIED TO UNDERSTAND. It might be because I'm a swiftie, I'm a creative writer, or that I actually have common sense, but I thought when someone doesn't understand something in writing they look it up or at least ask about it. Not even just about writing or when it comes to Taylor, IN GENERAL. Okay, let's get into some of her lyrics.
PATIENT ZERO
"I know he charmed your family and friends
And you thought it’s 'cause he loves you
But it’s 'cause he loves how everybody else loves him"
In my opinion, that lyric is not hard to understand whatsoever. She's saying that the girl thought that the guy was getting close to her family and friends because he is genuinely interested in forming a bond with who she cares about because he cares about her so deeply, but he's really only doing that because he just enjoys the feeling of having everyone loved him. Basically, he's just doing it for a "good status". BUT , unfortunately, people have grown LAZY and don't actually try to understand something before immediately bashing it. Like, it's not even about not liking the lyric or not understanding it-- it's about immediately calling it "bad" because you don't understand what the speaker is saying or you don't understand the way it's being worded.
WHO'S AFRAID OF LITTLE OLD ME?
"You wouldn't last an hour in the asylum where they raised me"
This one's simple. It's just a metaphor. People bashed Taylor and said "Oh! She wants to be a victim!" because she grew up upper class-- BUT THAT'S. NOT. WHAT. SHES. TALKING. ABOUT. She's talking about the music industry, simple as that!!! And the people hating on her for this lyric is quite literally proving her right in real time. I mean, Taylor is a poet and a song writer-- her lyrics are NOT always going to be literal and she will use metaphors..but some people don't like thinking!
OPALITE
"Sleepless in the onyx night
But now the sky is Opalite"
BEFORE I TALK ABOUT THIS ONE I'LL HAVE YOU KNOW I AM FULLY BLACK!!!!!!! To be honest, I've only heard the chorus of Opalite (which is this part), but people took this lyric TOTALLY the wrong way. People called this lyric racist towards black women and said that it was a jab at Travis's ex (idk who that is)?? Baby...no. This lyric literally just means you're going from being depressed to being in a happy loving relationship. That's literally it, woohoo! Also, I believe Taylor literally has BLACK FEMALE FRIENDS. And before you hit me with the "But they're all lightskin!" STILL BLACK WOMEN. Don't even try that colorism mess. And, Taylor has shown support to women who are not lightskin (Teyana Taylor) and has had friends who are not lightskin (Uzo Aduba & Joy Oladokun). Taylor literally had black women in her "The Fate Of Opehlia" music video.
I promise you, people try so hard to make Taylor seem like this evil monster-- and yes, I don't know Taylor personally and I'm not gonna say "She's an angel!"-- but based off of what I've seen, Taylor is a fairly good person. She has donated to food banks, donated to disaster relief funds, help with financial aid for fans, etc. So, the fact that she is hated on so hard is actually insanity to me-- and it's not about disliking her music, everyone has subjective taste, you don't have to like Taylor! But, it's about hating on her simply because she's Taylor Swift. Sharing your opinion is no longer just sharing your opinion when you use insulting language and words that are targeted-- it becomes hating! And then people love to act like swifties are hostile when we defend her, but, anybody else would do the same for their favorite artist, so WHY are we coo-coo-for-coco-puffs when we do it??? And majority of the time the person is literally being INSANELY disrespectful, and then when a swiftie says something, it's "proving the point that swifties are crazy"...Riiight. Hostility is greeted with more hostility, why would someone sit there and let you bash their favorite artist so rudely??? And yea, a lot of swifties are crazy, I'll admit that and they're a HUGE part of the issue as well-- but I might do another post on that. Also, going back to what I said about the "I don't personally know Taylor Swift"-- this also applies to the haters as well. You do not know that woman personally, you cannot call her an evil being just because you simply don't like her.
