September 2026 - Hale’s Rest Police Station
DC Burke took a moment to write down what I’d been saying before he resumed his questioning. It was all to remain unofficial, off the record. Legally, I was dead, gone, vanished. I knew I could trust him, because he had seen the result of what happened when someone crossed me. And anyway, I didn’t mind telling him. In all honesty, I quite liked the attention. It had been so long since I’d had someone to talk to about that summer.
'Hold on,' he said, raising a hand. ‘I’m just gonna pause you there. Before we get any further, I just wanted to ask: what was it with the nicknames? How did those come about?’ He turned his notebook to the front and showed me a table he had drawn up, listing our real names next to our nicknames. ‘I’m just curious about the inner workings of your, well, strange little lives.’
I smiled. ‘Strange?’
‘You know what I mean. You guys were the town misfits. Everyone knew of you, but nobody really knew you,’ he said nervously, like it might have caused me offence.
‘Yeah, well, we were just kids. We were stupid. We hated our parents and everything they gave us. But a name is easier to change than a family, so that's where we started.’ I shrugged, like it was nothing. ‘I’ve had mine the longest, though.’
‘Please, tell me.’ He sat there, his pen ready to scribble down whatever I said like it mattered. I could’ve just lied about everything, and he’d have no clue, but I was still the same arrogant little shit who wanted recognition for the things I did.
‘I was abandoned as a baby. My birth mother left me in a skip like I was some leftover takeaway. I should have died, left out in the cold like that. But I didn’t - Reverend Green found me. The old Reverend Green, the dead one. He was passing by, having missed the bus, and heard my crying. If I hadn’t had that strength to muster up those cries, or if he hadn’t missed the bus, I’d have frozen. But I didn’t- he found me. And he took me to the hospital and made sure I was okay. They didn’t have a name for me, so they called me Rev’s baby. Of course, when I went to the foster family, I was given a name. But everyone still called me Rev. And I like it.’
‘If you don’t mind me asking, what was the name they gave you?’
‘Mary,’ I shivered at the memory of that name. ‘Mary Martha Craily. I hate it.’
‘I get it. You don’t look like a Mary.’
‘Exactly! Just how Spike doesn’t look like a Dennis, Nails doesn’t look like a Charlie and Rusty doesn’t look like an Edmund! That’s why no one called us by our real names. We didn’t suit them.’
‘So, what are the stories behind Spike, Nails and Rusty?’
‘Spike dressed like a knock-off version of Spike from Buffy, Nails once hammered not one, but two nails through his own hand when he was like eight, and Rusty has red hair. They’re really not that interesting.’
DC Burke laughed. ‘It is, actually. You guys had invented this whole other world for yourselves, and that’s where all these events made sense. To us, you guys just seemed mad.’
‘Yeah, well.’ I thought back to the Shed, and the smell of cigarette smoke. I thought about how little DC Burke knew. I smiled. ‘Maybe we were.’
God, I wanted a cigarette so bad.

Review 3 ~
Tho this makes me think that well, they were all just pretending to be teens anyway and it’s no biggie at all and they change identities all the time. Am I reading too much into this one line? Maybe.(Yeah I don’t rly have the energy for more than one review a day atm)
Ah we are back in the present. I appreciate that more. I wasn’t too happy about the flashback.
OH MY DEAD GONE?? WHAT? That is ~interesting~! Now I want to know what went down back then! That is a hook if I have ever read one =D
Relatable =D
Also I wonder what happened to the rest of the clique that Rev has no one else to talk to anymore. I worry.
Thank you DC B+, this almost puts you into “Tikaa will remember your name” territory~
Did Rev also have a nickname? Pls tell me she did! Also why is she the only girl. Is this a vampire thing. The wife wrote a vampire thing like this, where a female vampire has a horde of male drones under her command and is territorial to all other female vampires, driving them away the second they spawn? (Great series too. Sadly all in German)
I also wonder if they had powers before they turned vampires and someone or something during that summer made them transform or if they are born vampires?
Reverend Green! From Cluedo!
I like the backstory to the name. Still sounds too much like narration and not like speech, even if this is part of what Rev memorized.
Rusty most definitely does not look like an Edmund o_o
That said, I think I am less interested in the names than I thought I would be. I think you could have left it as “we changed it bc changing names is easier than changing families” and it would have worked v well like this. They sound like generic biker gang names afterall.
Even with that added info that apparently the names are part of the mystery, I wasn’t really that into this explanatory paragraph.
That’s it for now. See you tmr for the final part and I hope this helps in deciding what you wanna do in November ^^
i love that you read into this though! I can explain the overal plot i had planned if you like, just in case i dont get round to writing this in novemeber.
your wife sounds so cool! And tbh, i think it is a vampire thing. I was recently reading about female vampire representation in film and how often they are presented as seductive women, and they are a threat to the natural order because they often are seen as lesbian as they can seduce women... (carmilla, which is a vampire story predating dracula, is very much lesbian coded, since people saw being lesbian as something scary) and the men are scared of this or something... im not doing the idea justice but it's super interesting. i watched this film called 'the hunger' where this vampire woman is thousands of years old and never ages but the man she turned to have as a companions starts to age after a few hundred years and is so old she just locks him in a coffin with her past lovers and seduces a straight woman into being her new lover, but the woman is able to fight back and kill her.
But specifically for this story I think i just drew from my experience of mainly having male friends at that age!
that's totally fair. rereading it cringed me out a bit tbh. I could definitely rework this to be a better point, like maybe she says it doesn't matter and doesn't reveal their names, because there's power in a real name and i suppose DC Burke would know their real names if they were arrested now i think about it... hmmm..
thank you again!
Their nicknames do have interesting stories. They’ve only got each other. They only like each other. I like DC Burk. He’s cool. I do agree that the nicknames are more suitable for them than their actual names. If only whoever abandoned Rev could see her now. Well, they never will. I have enjoyed this chapter. I will read the other tomorrow.
I wish you a great and lovely day and night.
Hello! @Thediffident here to review this part of your awesome story:
I love DC Burke and Rev's conversations! DC Burke seems amazing and really kind-hearted and I can really see him caring for Rev.
You did such a great job with this! You didn't say much about what exactly happened to Rev but in a way said enough to make the readers curious.
Thankyou so much DC Burke for requesting an origin story. I too was curious to learn as to how they got their nicknames. Great work on building up each character and their stories! Making an original character is tough work but you did and portrayed each one flawlessly. Bravo!
From the supermarket to the mayor to the supernatural beings, everything seems linked and now even the Hale's Rest? I have no idea how or what this story will bring in the future but I have already become a fan of it. Great work on the planning this story in such a diverse way. The way you leave loose ends here and there in the story is amazing. Keep it up!
P.s.- I believe you made a spelling error in 'baby' in the first line.
These stories sounds hilarious and fun, relatable even! Even though these guys are supernatural, their mannerisms/ activities are human like yet they still have to go through so much. Great job explaining this with a fun paragraph!
As a fangirl I am sobbing after reading this. What do you mean by 'were' asjsjsjsjsjs but as a calm and collected reviewer, great job at hinting at the possible outcome we may see in the story.
Overall, I loved this part, your writing style was great. The conversation was simple and to the point. Many hearts of the readers were broken with the last line but great job with the story! Can't wait to read more!
Love, Andy
