The ceiling melts to violet above my bed,
While restless colours bloom inside my head.
I drift beneath a tide of sleepless blue,
Until four little paws come walking through.
He wakes beside me when the night turns strange,
A quiet pulse moving through the darkened range.
His whiskers brush my cheek, then disappear,
A tiny constellation drawing near.
His paws press softly into sheets of red,
Leaving pale impressions where I rest my head.
I feel each step before I see his face,
Four little stars returning me to place.
The walls breathe green; the bedroom starts to sway,
While heavy thoughts turn ultraviolet grey.
My hands retreat beneath the scarlet sea,
And something warm comes walking back to me.
He crosses where my trembling fingers lie,
Then settles there and watches with one eye.
His pawprints bloom like flowers through the gloom,
Four little moons awakening the room.
The numbers bleed from clocks that cannot speak,
While fractured hours crawl across my cheek.
I lose myself inside their pulsing glow,
Until his gentle weight reminds me so.
Depression paints the ceiling indigo,
And makes the darkest parts of midnight grow.
The old familiar urges start to appear,
Then find his breathing whispering in my ear.
He wakes again and climbs across my chest,
As though he knows precisely where to rest.
His paws leave silver echoes on my skin,
And pull me from the place I'm sinking in.
I dream my scars become electric vines,
That twist around my arms in crooked lines.
They bloom with colours no one else can see,
Until his paw interrupts the dream in me.
The mattress turns to water underneath,
And sleep becomes a mouth of pearly teeth.
I start to fall through oceans made of sound,
Then feel four tiny footsteps come around.
He kneads the scarlet blanket, one by one,
While somewhere in the curtains grows the sun.
His purring turns the crimson room to gold,
A fragile warmth against the night's cold hold.
Morning spills like mercury through my mind,
And leaves the fevered colours far behind.
His pawprints fade, but leave their quiet trace,
A small, warm promise I can still embrace.

the fact that i had to pause and think if this poem was real after i read it is insane. the way you emphasized how your cat brings you comfort and how you described the whole setting is severely impressive. one thing i loved about your poem is that, as a reader, you made me read the poem like singing the lyrics to a song. the poem felt alive in my head and you established a flowing rhythm with each carefully chosen word. i honestly do not see any flaws you should change, but some of your lines kind of repeat the same feeling that you're trying to describe, such as the description of gloominess in stanzas 1 and 4. overall, though, you have a great potential ahead of you, and im excited to read your other works! keep publishing and keep going! im rooting for you, this is seriously an amazing atmospheric poem that words wouldnt have been enough to describe it.
Wow, thank you really for this, I appreciate your lovely comments. I chose to deliberately repeat myself on purpose as the fight with depression can also be quite repetitive.
Thank you so much again, I will hopefully be posting more soon.
It's a lovely poem. And it really shows the beautiful bond between you and your cat. It's my first time reading a poem on feline and I loved it.
• Stanza 1: The first three lines of the poem describes the state of exhaustion of a person. Mentally under the restless monologues of them that drifts them away in a dream-like state but not into slumber which shows physical wary. That's under the gentle appearance of four paws towards you. That's endearing in a way.
•Stanza 2: It works prettily in showcasing the affection of the cat to you. Covering you with its love when the nights get too dark. I actually like this stanza ☁
•Stanza 3: Describing his paws as stars creates such a nice imagery. It goes so well to what you described that you were feeling in the darkness of mind. The paws come to you like little stars finally appearing in the night sky. Knowing that it's him, before laying eyes on him, also adds a sense of heartfelt familiarity.
•Stanza 4: It's like a blanket in the cold. The lines here are gorgeous. Then the cat comes like a sun in the cold, to keep you warm.! Makes me want to bring a cat home truly. But one thing that I want to mention— stanza 1,2 and 3 are pretty much the same. Like the first three lines shows your exhaustion, gloom and greyness then the cat appears. It's a bit repetitive. The lines on their own are beautiful though!
•Stanza 5: The image of the cat crossing over "where my trembling fingers lie" creates an immediate contrast between internal anxiety/vulnerability (the trembling fingers) and steady, physical companionship. His choice to settle right there and watch "with one eye" adds a realistic, comforting touch—portraying the cat as a vigilant yet cozy guardian.
•Stanza 6: It feels like lines that only can be written when you truly love someone. Losing track of time as he lay himself on you, purring that makes the heart go back to gentle beating. It feels like, "Oh to love and to be loved. "
•Stanza 7: Then when the mind goes back to the past, to the harsh memory. The sound of whispering keeps you grounded. It's like a slow fight of indigo for ache and baby pink of love.
•Stanza 8:
It's one line that I'll remember.
Stanza 9: It's one of my favorite. The line—
Actually pulls the reader out from deep monologues in the head to a fluffy presence. It's delightful.
•Stanza 10: Stanza 10 captures a vivid sense of vertigo and loss of control. The line "sleep becomes a mouth of pearly teeth" transforms night terrors/insomnia into a threatening predator, while "mattress turns to water" conveys the destabilizing physical feeling of falling into a nightmare. The final line introduces the cat's presence as a physical anchor interrupting this abyss.
Stanza 11: It acts as the dawn after the storm, shifting from chaotic, fluid imagery to steady, rhythmic comfort. The act of kneading "one by one" grounds both speaker and reader into a slow, rhythmic reality.
The change in the color palette is an artistic touch that makes the reader more connected to your poem.
Last Stanza / Stanza 12: It's feels like a promise that has been sealed without words and only through love. It gives the poem it's perfect ending. It lands on the reader's chest like a weightless White flower of pure affection.
Overall, I really loved the poem. I wish your cat great health and joy! And you too surely! Thank you for sharing your work.
Have a nice day!!!
