An Appeal to the Universe

In My Poetry

PreviousNext
I can't fall in love again
Not when crises are high and the fear of it lives in you
Not when you can't afford another heartbreak
Not when your hopes and faith are shattered from the last
Not when your heart still aches even after a long time
Not when you have panic attacks thinking about it
Not when you feverishly cried imagining it alone
Not when other couples give you the ick
And the hope that was once there

Everything fell the moment I shattered
Everything became a threat to me and my life
Everything became dangerous
Everything became wrong
Everything became hauntingly impossible
Everything felt like it would shatter my last moments of happiness
Like it would achingly burn if I even tried to have hope again

My heart cannot choose again
My heart cannot love again
My heart cannot tell me what to do again
My heart cannot beat for another again
My heart cannot create another hope again
Before all that's left will be my soul

Then came a new light
Tell me why I feel this way
Tell me why I get goosebumps thinking of him
Tell me why I can't take him off my mind
Tell me why, even though he's really annoying and crazy
I don't hate him. Not really but

I cannot open my heart again
I cannot like him
I cannot love again
For I fear I'll break

Why is he like this?
Why does he like me?
Questions like these make me wonder what the Universe is up to

What kind of a story is this?
O generous Universe and the Heavens above, please answer my questions clearly
...If not, please let him leave me alone.

I cannot say I relate much, having not been afforded the experience of such intense feelings, but I can tell you this: I don't think the Universe is up to anything. Your subject might eventually leave you alone, but these feelings, too, shall pass. The doors to your heart will open again, and perhaps, without even realising it, you'll find yourself loving again. Come back to this piece twelve months from now, then you'd discover your heart might have other plans, though your mind have already forbidden it.

That said, the way you've articulated your present feelings is remarkably intense. I cannot claim to understand them, but you've conveyed them so vividly that I can almost feel them. And perhaps that's the beauty of writing: making someone feel what they've never experienced.

I really liked this piece. The feelings felt very real, especially the fear of opening your heart again after being hurt. The lines about not being able to love again hit hard, and I liked how the mood slowly changed when the new person appeared. The ending made me smile a little because even though the speaker keeps saying they don't want to fall in love, it's pretty obvious they're starting to care. Nice job!

I will not condemn you for what you did yesterday, if you do it right today.
