My name is Thomas, and for a long time, I thought getting used to a new place would be easier than it actually was.

After moving to a new city for work, I found myself living alone in an apartment that never really felt like home. My days became repetitive. I would leave for work in the morning, come back in the evening, make something quick to eat, and spend most of the night watching television just to have some noise around me.

I had always considered myself independent, so I didn't talk much about how isolated I was beginning to feel. Even when friends asked how things were going, I usually gave them the same answer: “I'm doing fine.”

Things slowly changed when I adopted a small mixed-breed dog named Bailey.

At first, I thought having a dog would simply give me some company. Instead, Bailey completely changed my daily routine. She would wake me up early, wait by the door when it was time for our morning walk, and somehow always know when I was having a difficult day.

There were evenings when I would come home exhausted and sit quietly on the couch. Bailey would climb beside me and rest her head against my leg. She didn't need me to explain anything. Her presence alone made the apartment feel less empty.

Over time, I realized that having Bailey around was helping me take better care of myself. I started going outside more, meeting people in the neighborhood, and keeping a more consistent routine.

There was one problem, though. My apartment had a strict no-pet policy, and I knew I couldn't simply assume that keeping Bailey there was allowed. I started researching emotional support animals and trying to understand what documentation was actually required.

During that process, I came across My ESA Therapist and decided to schedule a consultation. I didn't want to take shortcuts or simply pay someone for a letter. I wanted to talk with a licensed mental health professional and understand whether an emotional support animal was actually appropriate for my situation.

During the consultation, I was able to explain what I had been experiencing and how having Bailey had affected my daily life. The conversation helped me understand the difference between simply wanting to keep a pet and actually meeting the requirements for an emotional support animal.

Having that conversation gave me peace of mind. I felt like I had approached the situation responsibly instead of trying to find a way around my apartment's rules.

Today, Bailey is still beside me. My apartment hasn't changed much—the same walls, the same furniture, the same view outside the window.

But it finally feels like home.

Sometimes, the biggest changes in life don't arrive with a major announcement. Sometimes they have four paws, a wagging tail, and a habit of sitting beside you when you need it most.

A Butterfly has landed to review your work!<3

Hi Thomas! A Butterfly has landed to review your work, and When Bailey Made My New Place Feel Like Home is a very sweet, slice-of-life piece that showcases the importance of companionship perfectly. I thought that the lack of focus on dramatic events and the focus on the changes that happen little by little were handled beautifully.

The Egg

The setup immediately puts the loneliness of the situation across without a fuss. In spite of Thomas having everything he needs, the place still feels empty.

I liked how his words and actions reflect what he tells everybody else

I'm doing fine.

...and what he keeps to himself: his sense of isolation.

The Caterpiller Hatches

Bailey's entry into Thomas's life completely changes the flow of day-to-day events. I liked how she doesn't solve everything at once by simply being there but rather eases him into the routine of taking walks and waiting for him at home.

The scene where she rests her head against his leg particularly stood out to me because it shows how much her mere presence contributes to Thomas's sense of wellbeing without requiring any extraordinary circumstances

She didn't need me to explain anything. Her presence made the apartment feel less empty.

Growing and Molting

My favourite part about this piece is that it makes clear that Bailey's positive impact extends beyond her being a source of inspiration for Thomas. She gently but surely encourages him to go outside and meet people.

It makes the resolution even more satisfying to see because it portrays her role in his life realistically: as a tool to help him through difficult times, not a magic cure.

Spinning the Chrysalis

The way the apartment's no-pet policy is handled is another strength of this piece. Thomas's reactions are perfectly in line with how a person who genuinely cares about pets would act.

I thought it was smart of him to research emotional support animals before even considering the possibility of adopting a pet

The Transformation

The consultation scene is equally well-written because it showcases Thomas's thought process without beating around the bush. He realistically portrays his feelings and concerns, and the resolution falls into place effortlessly.

I personally think that it's important for this type of story to show the distinction between pure affection and the specific circumstances of an emotional support animal to highlight the importance of both.

Wings Taking Shape

I liked the scene where Thomas reflects on how little the apartment has changed

The same walls, the same furniture, the same view outside the window.

But it finally feels like home.

My impression of the resolution is very positive as well because it ties everything back to how little needed to change for Thomas to adjust to his new life. The atmosphere is heartwarming without being overly sentimental, and the four paws and wagging tail epilogue is a nice touch.

First Flight

My opinion on the piece as a whole is also positive. I think that this kind of slice-of-life narrative is rarely done this well in terms of capturing the feeling of quiet, steady change

I think that if anything could be added, it would be more glimpses of the relationships between Thomas and Bailey. Perhaps one day, when the two are taking a walk, something endearing or noteworthy could occur to further highlight their bond.

Favorite Nectar

My favourite part was, without a doubt, the reflection on Thomas's new life and how it shows in the apartment.

The same walls, the same furniture, the same view outside the window.

But it finally feels like home.

I think that it's a very strong closing scene because it summarises the changes that occurred without changing much in the apartment itself. Thomas made it his home, and that's a wonderful way to represent the slow and steady adjustment he made to his new life in the city.

Overall, a very sweet, wholesome story. Great job! <3

I would also like to note that while reading this it needs a bit more feeling, at the beginning of the short writing it is quite clear that your character struggles with mental health but later on you say that "it finally feels like home". You may want to convey the feeling more at the beginning of the writing that it doesn't feel like home, or convey his happiness at the end. It is still a satisfying read, keep up the good work!

Also maybe consider describing Bailey a bit! She comes across as an Aussie mix or golden retriever!

I really enjoyed reading this although for a short story it is a bit fast pace and would benefit from a small amount of detail. Otherwise though great job!
