I wake up feeling hazy
Bad decisions I made the night before screaming at me like an alarm clock
It woke me up
The pain woke me up
Isn't it ironic
The thing that put me to sleep is the thing that I woke up to,
The thing that I first registered,
Pain
I look down to my arm
The smell of copper, metal and steel making incredible sense,
I didn't mean to do it
I didn't want to do it
I promised I wouldn't do it
But like a promise is made
It is broken
Irrationally,
Irresponsibly,
Impulsively,
I wasn't thinking when I made the promise
I wasn't thinking when I broke the promise
All I wanted to do was to not think
Yet,
Here I lay awake
And all I have left to do is to think
So I promise,
I won't do it again.

> I really liked how raw and honest this feels. The repetition of “I wasn't thinking” and “I didn't want to do it” makes the ending feel more serious, especially when it comes back to the promise at the end. I also liked the line about pain being the first thing you registered after waking up. It makes the whole poem feel very immediate, like we're experiencing that morning with the speaker. One small suggestion: the line “But like a promise is made, it is broken” feels a little unclear compared to the rest of the poem. Maybe you could reword it so the meaning comes through more naturally. Other than that, I really liked the simple style and how the poem doesn't try to make the emotions sound overly complicated. The ending also gives it a sense of hope after everything that happened.

hey juke here ! i just wanted to pop in and say a few choice words about this poem, as it really caught my eye. for your first time doing poetry, it is v. well-written ! repetition is something i love to see in poetry and that’s something that really enhanced yours.
it feels like this poem is going in a circle (in a good way) - sort of as if we’re inside the narrator’s head. and as you describe them doing something they deeply regret, i think you couldn’t have chosen a better frame for your piece. :)
your figurative language in

I look down to my arm
The smell of copper, metal and steel making incredible sense,

Bad decisions I made the night before screaming at me like an alarm clock

The thing that put me to sleep is the thing that I woke up to,

and in several other lines are v. satisfying to read and they add onto your poem beautifully.
i have nothing to suggest here! please keep writing, and I can’t wait to see what you come up with next.

Hiihii! I loved how you can really feel how much the speaker regrets whatever they did last night, yet you didn't spill too much of what happened which keeps it a mystery! Also, I really like the lines "All I wanted to do was to not think" & "And all I have left to do is to think", showing how what the speaker initially tried to avoid comes back to bite them!

This was really nice to read! You did so well <333

Hey! I loved the rawness and straightforwardness of this poem. The feelings described in the poem are very relatable, especially the one about waking up to the aftermath of a drunk night.

I particularly like how the author personifies the alarm clock, it shows the pain already caused by the night of drinking. The conflict between not wanting to think and thinking nonetheless really resonated with me, as drinking often does leave us with thoughts we would like to forget.

The repetition of “I didn’t mean to,” and “I promise” is also a nice touch, it creates a sense of circularity which helps the poem flow better

The return to the titular phrase in the closing couplet is also very fitting, as it makes the final promise seem simple, yet, in context, it is obviously not. This poem feels very sincere and relatable, not self indulgent at all. Lovely work! <3
