In Life Is Hard

PreviousNext

I bounce from place to place.
I bounce from person to person.
Sometimes I'm funny.
Sometimes I'm fierce.
I travel between worlds.
I travel between homes.
Sometimes I'm warm.
Sometimes I'm cold.
I go from story to story.
I go from life to life.
Sometimes I'm the protagonist.
Sometimes I'm the antagonist.
It all just depends on who you are for me.
Are you bouncing?
Just like I am?

My favourite lines:
'I go from story to story
I go from life to life'
I'm thinking of fate...if you're destined to something then it will also happen to you in another life.
I love the flow of time in this poem :)

Poem made me want to rant so warning this is not a review. If I dare label it a review sue me!

Spoiler
I'm typically the antagonist usually even with those I love.

I see myself as the antagonist, to myself, to sleep schedule, it's the self in which I could do whatever I want! I hear they say gen alpha will be more nihilistic.

But I'm just lying to myself, aren't I? It doesn't matter who you are, it just depends on my mood wether I'm your antagonist or friendly side-character but my own mind is my antagonist. I tend to stick on only one word when I rant like this for this one it's antagonist.

My mind is quite the nihilistic little demon and I accidentally gave it fictional flesh. I swear he wasn't meant to be my personality taken to the extreme in flesh! I just wanted a story about a arrogant little fox who also happens to be a cursed prince. Fun fact: this is how I used to speak to the AI, it's a poem, isn't it?

I spell better with a tablet compared to a physical keyboard. How odd. Wait - Your the most sarcastic person ever on here? An autistic person's nightmare- Digital sarcasm! I will be your melodrama in sarcasm!

I always confuse you for Darlet mentally for some reason. ✨mEnTaLlY✨

My mind has merged you both but if I'm honest your much more calm compared to Darlett. I feel Darlett is more anxious.

Maybe this was an inappropriate place to put this? No worries, it's in a spoiler!

Oh this is all so true! I really relate to the creating a character to put all your crap into. I did that with one of my characters, her name is Keahi. I needed a way to look at my issues from a new perspective so I created her. Yeah, Darlet and I are pretty similar.

Spoiler
I did not mean to out a extreme version of my own personality in my character. My subconscious is amazing at connections. Fun fact: Chess.com has a chess personality quiz and I'm the mastermind another one if you were 16 I would not act so much like a "Im14andthisisdeep" cliche afterall I dress to impress

Hello, AJ ( if I can call you that! ) again.
Queenie here with a review!!!

At first glance, this is a beautiful short poem that beautifully explains who you are, or life in general

Praise:

Sometimes I'm funny.
Sometimes I'm fierce.

This is so true; this is how I feel too sometimes. It depends tho, if someone annoys me or if I don't like someone, I feel fierce; otherwise, I'm a funny girl who tries to make everyone laugh.

Sometimes I'm the protagonist.
Sometimes I'm the antagonist.
It all just depends on who you are for me

So is this line.

Critique:

Just like I am?

Hmmm, I just think that just like me would have fit better. but that's about it, really

Love,
Queenie

Hiii, Aster here! Just read your piece. I'll try my best to rate your poem!

First, wow. Just.. wow-

I mean, your poem is so pretty! It seems like a normal poem at first with no overly polished figures of speech and just basic but when you peek through the basic façade, it carries such a heavy meaning.

As far as I can understand, it's about human life, how we're different in everyone's perspective - like a needle who's the seamstress's best friend and a grandmother's foe when she tires to dig a thread through it for her benefit.

It can also be about life in general, like how it keeps shifting like chapters in a book.

I hope to read more from you,
Take care!

Hello, hope all is well. Here is my review.

From first glance, this is a short simple poem. I like that every two lines, you start with the same words and stay consistent with that until you reach towards the last three lines. Bouncing between the big scale view to the close/relatable counterpart.

Place... Person
Worlds... Homes
Story... Life

With each "I" lines, followed with the characteristic/emotion that correlates with those scenarios. Really well structured and light hearted to read.

I love the way you reeled everything together with the third to last line:

It all just depends on who you are for me.

I find it interesting that for this line, instead of saying "to me", you say "for me". Not sure if this was intentional. Feel like "to me" would've flowed better. However, "for me" is interesting because it implies that the narrator prefers (if not, fully accepted) their reality of bouncing as it benefits them. Not sure how, and kind of hard to word the reasoning behind it. But it also implies that maybe the switching of personalities/realities is what keeps them stable with all the changes. And in that light, it makes this line stand out a lot.

The only other thing I could say is for the last line:

Just like I am?

I think it would've brought the whole poem home by saying "Just like me?". I think that end it off better, making it a bit smoother to read. Otherwise, this is really nice. I enjoyed reading this. Great work, and I look forward to reading more from you

i came here to write a review but honestly I’m just blabbing </3

this is an itty bitty little short poem but it caught my eye nonetheless … the wording is blunt (in a good way !!! ) and upfront, something i really love to see in poetry. I’m gonna plagiarize Shakthisinha when i say that the word ‘bounce’ has a lot of emphasis here, it’s light and silly in most contexts but using it instead of using a heavier, less funnily-connotated word makes this whole thing so much better.

i like how the narrator doesn’t really express whether or not they hate bouncing from personality to personality .. they just sort of accept it as who they are, rather than who they’re trying to be.

It all just depends on who you are for me.

THIS. this line is just so (insert good enough word here). shifting inflections and personalities depending on who the person is is something i can relate to deeply, the way you manage to express so much in a single line is (insert 2nd good enough word here)- I can’t even describe it.

i also love how you end the poem with a rhetorical question, thus making the reader look inside themselves and wonder whether they’re on the outside looking in or whether they, too, bounce from life to life, trying to find who they are or should be …

all that to say, i love this, Mrytle ! can’t wait to see what you come up with next :]

Namaste this is shakthisihna,

There is something strangely familiar about this poem. It feels like the kind of thought that comes to you when you realise that you are slightly different with everyone, but you are not sure which version of you is actually yours.

The word “bounce” is what holds the whole poem together. I like that it isn't a heavy word. It almost sounds childish and playful, but what it describes isn't necessarily playful. The speaker is moving between people, homes, worlds and lives, almost as if staying in one place or one identity is impossible.

What I enjoyed most is how the poem slowly moves from ordinary things to something more personal. At first, we get “funny” and “fierce,” then “warm” and “cold,” and eventually we reach “protagonist” and “antagonist.” That last contrast changes the way I looked at everything before it. It made me think that maybe the poem isn't really about changing at all. Maybe it is about perspective. The same person can be someone's comfort and someone else's problem without either version being completely false.

I also like that the speaker doesn't try to decide which version is the “real” one. There is no attempt to say, "this is who I truly am." Instead, the poem leaves that uncertainty hanging. I think that makes it more interesting because people are rarely just one thing.

The simplicity of the poem works for me, although I think it sometimes becomes almost too simple. The repeated structure gives it movement, but there are places where I felt the poem was circling around an idea I had already understood. I wanted it to surprise me somewhere to give me one image or moment that only this speaker could have given me.

The ending does that to some extent. “Are you bouncing?” feels almost like the speaker suddenly notices the reader standing there and asks, "you do this too, don't you? " I like that little turn. It makes the poem less about one person's identity and more about the strange way all of us become different people in different lives.

For me, the poem's biggest strength is its idea rather than its language. The language is deliberately simple, but the thought underneath it is not. I think with a little more specificity something from an actual home, relationship, memory, or moment ,the poem could become much more memorable. Right now, I understand the speaker, but I don't completely know them yet.

Still, I like where the poem leaves me. It doesn't give a neat answer to who the speaker is. It just keeps bouncing and maybe that is the point.

anyways i wish u all the best and keep writing ...

Mrytle! This is so, so beautiful and relatable.

Sometimes I'm funny.
Sometimes I'm fierce.

This 100% resonated with me, I get the feeling of being someone now, and being someone different tomorrow. I don't know your reason, but i'm a total follower who's impersonating a leader.

It all just depends on who you are for me.
Are you bouncing?
Just like I am?

First of all, yes. Yes I am.
Second, this is truly so real. It's hard to be yourself, or to be a good person if someone is disrespecting/hurting you.

Thank you, have a good night/day, and be safe!
