Imogen couldn’t get enough of it. In every corner there were people with sharpened teeth, people that reached with wanting claws, and people that were taller than any human in the world.
They were all monsters, and they all had a home at the circus. They lived unapologetically frightful, and Imogen hungered for that life. She wanted to be more than human, she wanted to have a place in the world. School didn’t mean much to her, for the lessons were the same and she didn’t have friends, but if she were a monster, then everything would be better.
“You know it’s all fake, right? They’re all wearing costumes for the show.” Dad whispered.
Imogen whipped her head towards him, furrowing her brows. He couldn’t possibly be telling the truth, there was no way they were fake!
“It’s true. They’re all fake, but that’s what happens. Monsters aren’t real.” Mom said with a smile, as though everything was in good will.
Mom must have overheard what Dad said. Imogen didn’t really care. All she cared about was the fact that her parents lied to her, that they took her to a circus that had fake monsters.
Imogen clenched her fists, biting down her bottom lip to stop herself from screaming in frustration.
She was going to make monsters real, and then nobody was going to lie to her.
