Chapter One
I’m standing in the corner of Valerie’s room. She can’t move when I’m here. It’s fun to watch her eyes widen with fear with the knowledge that she can’t do anything about it.
Humans say that I’m a sleep paralysis demon. They’re wrong. I’m not just a demon, I’m an angel too. Humans can’t handle the presence of one of them alone, let alone both combined.
She deserves to be scared just for being human. That’s what my parents say.
Chapter Two
A deep, rasping roar rises from my mouth as she stares at me. Only she can hear it, my parents taught me to control it that way. It still echoes when I run towards her, claws outstretched as if I’m going to attack-
But now I’m falling through a swirl of orange and black. I’m not going to kill Valerie. I never was. I’m not allowed to. I’m only allowed to frighten.
She’s too dumb to know that, so as I get closer to her, my parents take me home.
Chapter Three
“Nice work. Now go upstairs and get your backpack.” Mom smiles, handing me a brown paper bag.
I turn to look out the living room window. Sure enough, the sun blazes brightly behind muddy white clouds. I guess I was gone long enough for school to start.
I take the bag from her and rush upstairs. There’s nothing in it, only despair and delight, abstract feelings that my parents feed me. It doesn’t taste like anything but energy.
Jenny always has better lunch food.
Chapter Four
I waited all day for recess to come and now, it’s finally here! Last time I tried getting a cookie from Jenny, she threw up on me. I mean, she did already eat it, but she shouldn’t have. I deserved it more than she did.
But what do you know it, she’s not here! I don’t see her in her usual spot. Or Valencia. Or Eirisse. Or Josh. Or Ralph and Eddie.
Am I the only here?
Chapter Five
Hold on, is that-Ralph and Eddie? Did they just-yes, they did. They just crawled out of the bushes.
“Beatrice! I never thought I’d be happy to see you!”
Somebody-Josh-is hugging me from behind. Where did he-it doesn’t matter.
I push him off of me, only to have him hug me again. Seriously, what’s his deal?
Chapter Six
“Don’t touch me.”
I’m trying to walk away from them, but they’re still following me, like they haven’t just heard me before. At least Josh isn’t clinging onto me anymore.
“I’m sorry Beatrice, it’s just-I saw Jenny’s parents! They’re human! Real, actual humans!” Josh calls out from behind me.
Excuse me, what?
Chapter Seven
“What do you mean?” I ask.
“I mean that Jenny’s parents are ghosts and were forced to be monsters. They don’t belong here.”
What…that doesn’t make sense. Eddie’s Mom is the only ghost here. There’s nobody else here that would be a ghost. Maybe Josh’s melting brain is finally getting to him.
“Well I don’t know what nonsense you’re talking about, but Eirisse is trapped in the human world and we have to get her out!” Ralph cried out.
Chapter Eight
He can’t be serious. Nobody is allowed to go to the human world except me and that’s at night. Ralph is just saying stuff because his own life is incredibly boring.
I hear the school bell thundering loudly throughout town. I fly away from them, heading over to my next class.
I don’t have time for this.
Chapter Nine
“My, what a small class we have today! Only one of you! No matter, let’s begin!” Mr. Smells-like-the-dead booms.
I’m in class and only just now he notices? He’s the only teacher here and I’m the only student. The boys didn’t join me because they went off to do their own thing.
I don’t think I can stand just doing nothing if they’re all out doing something else. It’s not fair that nobody is doing anything about them not being here.
And that Jenny isn’t here with her cookies, either.
Chapter Ten
“You know Josh came in here saying that Jenny’s parents were human ghosts? I think his mushy brain is making him stupid!”
What? It’s funny and it’s the truth. Mr. Smells-like-the-dead is a clown who laughs at a lot of things, so…why isn’t he cackling now? He’s not even saying anything.
“Beatrice,”
Chapter Eleven
Mr. Smells-like-the-dead is staring at me, looking, dare I say, dead serious. I can now actually smell the blood on him, along with other scents I cannot describe.
“Josh isn’t stupid. He’s not joking. I…I used to be human. All of us adults did. I..”
WHAT?! Human? But he doesn’t smell human. He just smells terribly awful and not in a good way.
He doesn’t seem like he’d be human.
Chapter Twelve
“I came here with my friends to have fun, to explore, but something happened here that made us what we are. A crackle, orange and black, exploded before us.”
He says this very gravely, more so than the real graves, in fact. I don’t hear anything else from town, it is completely silent.
“A Halloween explosion?”
Chapter Thirteen
“Yep! Before we knew it, we were monsters! I never saw my family again.”
“Prove it then.”
Humans are stupid creatures who shudder at what they don’t understand. That is not who my scare teacher is. If he really was a human, then he wouldn’t be as good as he is.
I need more than words.
Chapter Fourteen
Mr. Smells-like-the-dead smiles, a shrieking cackle escaping from his lips. My spine feels like it’s tingling, like there’s spiders crawling on it. Like I’m a human. I don’t like it.
“I do not need to prove anything to you! You only need to see for yourself.”
He gestures towards the blackboard, where a hole begins to form, mixed with colors that do not match at all. I think I smell strawberries, but the artificial candy version of it.
Am I supposed to crawl in it?
Chapter Fifteen
I only cross through dimensions when it’s nighttime and I need to scare the humans. I’m not going through a portal I’ve never been in before. In fact, I think I’ll fly away right-
I’m being launched right into the Halloween hole. I’ve caught Mr. Smells-like-the-dead smiling slightly more. He must have made the seats like cannonballs, gave them the power to push his students up in the air.
Of course he did. I should have known he’d do something like that.
I hope this doesn’t kill me or anything.
Chapter Sixteen
I’m in front of…a pink mansion? The white doors are wide open and out of them spill many connecting wires. I’m standing inside of a dirt hole, but I climb out of it.
I see Ralph and Eddie going into the mansion, too. I hear something from there, a voice…
Maybe there’s a human I can scare.
Chapter Seventeen
I put one leg in front of the other and let my wings take me up high. As I’m flying and looking through the windows, I see nothing but overly girly rooms. What does this have to do with Mr. Smells-like-the-dead being a human? I don’t see anything important.
But there’s one room in the mansion that looks weird. From the ceiling to the floor, it’s covered in wires. There are TVs on the wall playing a human cartoon. We don’t have cartoons in our town and I’m glad, because the shapes look too confusing for me.
I see the boys go inside.
Chapter Eighteen
I break the window with my claws and fly inside. It’s strange that I saw the boys go in, but I don’t want to talk to them. I was looking for a human and I’m going to find one.
As soon as I step into the room, I hear a faint wheezing. I can hear the quietest sound in any room. I have to be able to do that, being the demonic angel that I am.
I take a few steps back, getting closer to the sound.
Chapter Nineteen
There’s a clump of wires that have curly golden hair sticking out of it. I only know one creature who has curly golden hair, but I reach out and pull away some of the wires to make sure.
Her green eyes are watery, like she’s been crying…no, not like. There are dried tears on her face. She was. Of course she was, Eirisse always cries.
But I still take apart the rest of the wires. Even though she’s not very smart, I still don’t want to leave her.
Chapter Twenty
“Why are you even in the human world?!” I ask once I’ve gotten her out. I’m going to head towards the windows-
“Because we still have to stop her.”
Eirisse has rudely grabbed onto my wrist, so I push her off, but she grabs me again. Clearly she’s particularly bothered or else she wouldn’t be pulling on me so much.
And was that a human’s voice I heard?
