Every family has one. The one who doesn’t cry at the funeral because someone has to hold the tea tray. The one who says “I’m fine” so smoothly it sounds like a fact.
I was that one.
At nine I learned that a calm face is a currency. People pay you in trust, in relief, in you’re so mature for your age. They don’t see the cost. They don’t see that every compliment is a small brick, and you are building a wall around the only room in you that still wants to be held.
Strength, they call it. But I know what it really is. It’s a locked door with a smile painted on the outside.
I carried everyone’s weather. Their storms, their silences, their 3 a.m. phone calls. I became a well people drank from, and nobody asked who was filling it.
Here’s the thing no one says: the strong one gets lonely in a way weak people never do. Because even when someone finally asks “are you okay?” you’ve been fluent in yes for so long that your mouth does it on its own.
So this is for the ones holding the tray.
You’re allowed to set it down. The tea will go cold, the world will not end, and the people who love you will survive the shock of seeing you shake.
You were never made of stone.
You were made of someone who kept getting up.
That’s softer. That’s harder. That’s real.

Wow this hit me like a truck. It feels like you've known everything about my life and decided to write it down in this flawless way. This is amazing.
The metaphors you've used are amazing, and really personal. I love those. The currency one, and the "you're mature for your age" and how you build up on it, they're really well written!
And the tea tray metaphor is marvelous. It's genuinely just very lovely and memorable!
Your prose is also amazing, it's sharp and punchy I love it. There really isn't anything I would change or critique at all.
But one thing, I mean this in a good way, sometimes when I was reading it I felt like it was similar to ai. That isn't to say you used ai (I doubt ai could make those metaphors like the tea tray one) but that your style matches it, so people will definitely say that. Don't listen to em!
Loved reading it, this felt very close to home, and it was very nice being able to read my feelings without the effort of writing it myself ^^!
