“Dylan, you’re bleeding!” I gasp. I desperately try to soak it up using cobweb. It’s dark red, like rose-stained snow.

I suddenly remember what our Healer, Madal, taught us. Pressure. I hold the cobweb tightly, my hands trembling, and press it firmly against his side wound, wrapping it around. My chest tightens. My arms feel weak.

I hold my breath as little by little, it ceases, until there was no more. I let out a sigh of relief. “You’re okay?”

“Of course I’m okay,” he grumbles quietly. My gaze catches onto his hopefully. My heart sinks as he stares at me like he doesn’t know me. A cold glare.

I study his injuries, and decide that he will be okay by himself. It was all me that helped him, and not even a thank you? Ugh. Dylan glares at me. “What?”

I give an exasperated sigh.

“I hate you,” he lashes suddenly.

“I didn’t even say anything!” I glare at him, my face heating up, and whip around, stalking off. Who does he think he is? I scoff. The prince of provocation, probably.

“Raven!”

I turn around. Saber. I’ve been back for only a few minutes.

He looks delighted to see me. His face lights up. “Axel says that I have some free time! Do you want to go for a walk with me?” I smile. His eyes glint with energy. I can’t help but notice how his blonde hair matches the setting sun, and how his earthy gaze pair so well with his dark skin…

“So, yes or no?”

I blink myself out of it. “Oh…yes, sure!” I stammer.

He beams.

But…what if he accidentally spots Dylan? If he knows, he will blow his cover. I shake my head. That’s Dylan’s problem. He’s the one who refused my help.

“It’s such a nice evening, isn’t it?” Saber sighs. I look over. He’s staring into the trees. The sun, low in the sky, streaming through the dark green leaves. It’s like he only sees the beauty in life. “How do you…stay positive all the time?” I ask hesitantly.

“Life doesn’t last forever,” he replies. He stops and faces me, looking into my eyes. My chest flutters. “That’s why you got to cherish the good things.” He searches my face, looking for something. I don’t know what.

“Like…” he hesitates, and inches closer. My breath catches in my throat. “you’ve got to risk it.” His face is inches from mine.

A Pyra suddenly flies into the trees, the branches shaking, the leaves rustling. Saber suddenly sharply pulls away, his face reddening. “Never mind,” he mumbles awkwardly. “Wanna go back?”

I nod slowly, my mind racing, still processing what happened. We walk in silence for the entire walk back. I pretend to be unusually interested in the small stream we were following. I can’t tell what this feeling is.

“It’s so late,” Saber comments when we reach the entrance of the Eclipse camp. “Better head to bed.”

“Yeah,” I agree. He gazes at me for a moment longer, then murmurs, “Goodnight, Raven.”

“Night, Saber,” I say, still processing what happened only moments ago. I head to my room. The rooms in Eclipse are quite unique. Instead of one big building, each room is separate and scattered around the camp. More like…a tent.

I do my normal routine.

But when I get into my bed and throw my bed sheets over me, I can’t seem to sleep. My mind keeps drifting back to the memory of Saber…and it keeps me awake. I shuffle, turning to my side, then my stomach.

I don’t know when I dozed off, but the next second, bright sunlight is streaming through my window. I yawn, fatigue overwhelming me. I know I slept late. Suddenly a rush of thought hit me. I need to check on Dylan. Right. I sigh in frustration. How fun this is going to be.

“I didn’t think you would be back,” Dylan mumbles, his tone sharp. I push down the fear wanting to rack me. “I don’t want to, believe me. But for the sake of the Tribes, I unfortunately am,” I scoff. He stands up. “What is your plan anyway? Do you even have one?” He confronts. “Yes I do, stupid, can you stop questioning everything I say? Because OH MY GOSH, you’re annoying,” I practically scream at him. “Okay, okay, jeez,” Dylan mutters, turning away. I roll my eyes. “We-”

I suddenly break off as I hear roaring in the near distance. Coming from…the camp.

Dylan’s eyes narrow. “Change of plan, Raven. As much as I honestly hate working with someone as useless as you, there’s no choice.” I’m lit with rage. But I keep quiet, knowing whatever this is, I don’t have time to argue. “We need to join in whatever that is. If it’s in your territory, that means that Cobra ambushed them. This is a perfect distraction. Do you know where the pendant is?”

I don’t think so. Axel never showed anyone where he put it after I handed it to him. He’s definitely not wearing it…

I shake my head. “Axel didn’t tell me.”

“Come on, we’ll figure it out later.”

I squint. “Don’t tell me what to do.”

“Oh yeah?”

“Bet. Try me,” I challenge. Dylan scoffs. He swiped out his dagger sharply, and next thing I know, he has it hovered over my throat. I swallow, secretly grateful he wasn’t pressing it into my neck. My instincts take over, and I slap him. Hard. He recoils, and slides his dagger back into its sheath, his eyes cold.

“Huh,” Dylan mutters. “Brave of you.”

“I’ll come with you. But don’t assume this is over,” I add.

We walk quickly towards the camp. I hesitate. I can’t go in without defense. I look at Dylan’s fully equipped strap of weapons. “Can…can I have one?” I ask, gesturing to the weapons. “Big favor from me, right after you slapped me. Sounds so much like you,” he jeers. My face reddens. “But since I’m actually NICE, here.” He throws me a set of arrows and a bow. I catch it before it hits the ground. “You’re anything but nice,” I mutter under my breath. Either he didn’t hear me, or he is pretending not to.

The thing is, I’ve never used a bow. I’ve always used swords or knives. Never a bow. I sigh. Axel only taught me sword-fighting. Perhaps he forgot…

“What’s wrong now?” Dylan says. I can detect the frustration in his impatient tone. “I…um…”

“We don’t have all day, Raven.”

I sigh again. “I don’t know how to use a bow.” Dylan shakes his head and closes his eyes. “Okay.” Without warning, he steps behind me and holds the bow. “Come on.”

“Now is not the time to learn,” I snap.

“It’ll be quick.”

I grab it, and Dylan puts his hands over mine. I can feel the rise and fall of his chest as he adjusts the weapon.

“You pull back, and make sure the arrow is facing this way.” He points, and then equips it. I watch, wide eyed. “Then, you aim, and let go.” Dylan pulls it back even further, and lets go of the back hand. I let go with it. The arrow shoots towards a tree, and hits it, slightly to the right. I can’t help but admire.

“I think I should use a sword. Even if I know how to use it now, I’m not used to it,” I mumble.

Dylan sighs. “Fine.” He hands me a long, silver sword, and puts the arrows and bow back where it was.

“Hurry up now.”

Hello, Velvet! I'm back for another review. As you may remember, I've randomly popped in to read Mercy and I don't really know what's going on and I don't really read this kind of YA. But... I really liked chapter 7! So, we're back =P

You know, there's a kind of YA adjacent to what you write. The kind of YA that makes it to BookTok that's just smut. I think that kind of YA gives actual YA a lot of bad press. Writing good YA is difficult, surprisingly so, and I think you really manage to do it! The characters are simple, but not 1 dimensional, the dialogue is straightforward but not patronising, the action and emotional beats are obvious without being in your face, and the story is engaging!

What more do ya need? (I would say, though, that Raven reads too much like Bella from Twilight in that she has almost no agency and she's beholden to this edgy main guy; I feel like that's just a straight up negative).

That being said, there are a few craft issues. All dialogue from a different character should have its own line, for instance. The part where Raven asks Dylan for a weapon is a great example; after she asks her question, Dylan's dialogue should have its own paragraph. There's also this:

I hold my breath as little by little, it ceases, until there was no more.
Ik what you mean, but it's too clunk. Something more impactful: "I hold my breath as it ceases, slowly... until there was no more". As and until in one sentence can be difficult to parse for a reader.

Looking forward to... idk whichever part I read next lol!

Thank you so much for reading! I get that xP In the earlier chapters I wrote it when I was slightly more delusional before so I had to fix a lot of the things I wrote (cringe)
Thank you so much for taking your time writing a review, I really appreciate the advice!

It’s dark red, like rose-stained snow.

I really love this line! Similes in stories are always a good-time <3 It makes imagining what's going on, what our scene is, and what's in our scene less complicated for people who have a hard time imagining scenes when reading (me low-key, but we're not gonna talking about that) :D

I squint. “Don’t tell me what to do.”

“Bet. Try me,” I challenge.

I LOVE THE SPEAKERS ATTITUDE! Something about the whole 'you're not the boss of me' act is really entertaining and a lot better than a push over character in my opinion! The way you went about it was really nice too! You showed it through actions, instead of directly saying it-- which adds more flavor :333

That’s Dylan’s problem. He’s the one who refused my help.

This is low-key funny BAHAHA
The whole 'Not my problem' thing is really humorous > <

Overall, this was very entertaining! Even though I only read one page (which was this one)-- the writing, the situation, and the dialogue makes me want to read more of it-- which is what you really want whenever someone reads your work! To sum up my review, you did an awesome job & this was very fun to read, even if it's only one page! Keep writing! <33333

I love this soooo much!
First, I love the characters! I didn't have to second-guess or think really hard about what they might do; I think you have created a very beautiful world!
Second, I love a good teen fiction romance. I think all the books on my shelf right now are realistic fiction, with some teen romance 😏
Third, you didn't have any filler. (That was apparent, I mean) I did not read a single paragraph and think, well, that could have been written better. Or: Stop rushing! Ya know what I mean?
I think you did wonderfully, and I will be back for more!

Hia Catsz!
With the last chapter fresh in my mind, let’s continue with this story. For the AfterWatch!!

Oh excellent, we continue right where we left of, I approve! <3
Tho, how has he managed to hide the bleeding from Raven for this long … It must have bled through his clothes and the iron must have been in the air @-@

Tho given that Dylan seems rather calm, I guess it’s more the shock of him being injured to the point of breaking skin that has Raven so frenzied, huh? I have a little trouble envisioning how injured our guy is…

My heart sinks as he stares at me like he doesn’t know me.
I love this phrasing!

“I didn’t even say anything!”
Perfect reaction!

“Raven!”

I turn around. Saber. I’ve been back for only a few minutes.
You might want to put a scene break of sorts between this or before this. I got whiplash LOL

He looks delighted to see me. His face lights up
Hmm both sentences say the same thing, so I suggest getting rid of the former. The second one is much more evocative:3 Basically “His face lights up when he sees me” or smthing or mb just “he’s beaming at me”

My chest flutters.
Aww. I know you are building up this secondary love interest very rushedly but I do like the physical descriptions :3

He searches my face, looking for something. I don’t know what.
Oh that is so good too! I like what this says abt her too, that she doesn’t understand his intentions!

I can’t tell what this feeling is.
I like this! She has been so focused on Dylan lately, that the sudden intrusion of another guy is causing confusion~

I do my normal routine.
Oh might be a good idea to elaborate a little. Maybe on how the repetitive or familiar motions etc are calming her or distracting her?

Again I would love a larger scene break to show that she has changed location when she is suddenly at Dylan’s place. I’m surprised he hasn’t left yet…

Uhm since when are they in agreement to get the pendant back? I feel like they should at least discuss this part before they decide that a Cobra attack is the perfect distraction to get it back…

Wait a second, why is this woman afraid of going into her own camp without weapons. Nvm that, why has she LEFT without weapons when this whole area does seems so dangerous. And what makes her think that she won’t be able to swing by and get her own weapons? Maybe I’m a bit too drowsy but pls explain qq

That said, I do love that she asks Dylan for a weapon like that <3

“Now is not the time to learn,” I snap.
That is a good point. But given my colleagues went to archery class for the first time a couple of weeks ago, they got the hang of general aiming in less than an hour. Still way too long for this so wtf is Dylan thinking. Why not give her a dagger? Is this really only an excuse to touch her???

ake sure the arrow is facing this way.” He points, and then equips it
Uhm this feels like “do not forget to aim” which sounds super duper unhelpful. “Remember to use an arrow and not a brick” would be a similar type of advice (As someone who interviewed an archer abt how to properly shoot a bow, this doesn’t really work for me here)

Glad this was only an excuse to touch her and guide her xd I feel much more optimistic now that she gets to use her preferred weapon in the upcoming chapter ^^

PS: going through rough periods/writer’s block is normal. The important part is to not give up and navigate around the pitfalls. Have fun writing and if you don’t write anyway XD Writing do be hard <3

LMFAOOO YESSSS Some do the stuff sounds weirder bc while editing i realized many chapters were so rushed (betrayal in two chapter like WHAT ToT) So I tried my best to fix it! I love your advice and the kind words, it really gives me motivation <33

Tikaya replied · Sep 29

Ah that's typical for an earlier draft :3 right now you're building a good scaffolding that you're gonna fill in with editing later on! ✨
Also I'm happy you like my reviews. It's good to get feedback :)
