HAM
through the glass walls
they rattle and tap
throwing food while snide remarks echo
“preform for us” they jeer
“come on make us laugh make us cry l”
they press their faces against the panes
“are you dumb? or just broken? get up i want to be entertained”
what’s so great about this?
a room full of misfit animals
outcasted and closed off
extra breaks with the zookeepers
before our next show
this ones anxious
pills slipped in her breakfast
that ones dyslexic
words make him sweat
but no fear
animals can’t read anyway
she can’t be quiet
and he can’t stay awake
what do i have?
i start to shake
the glass panes shatter to shards
and stick in my lungs
the cheers become insults
hurled from the sun
they all watch as we melt down
trying to hold ourselves together
“shows over everyone”
no roses are thrown
no cheers or congrats
just barley acknowledged
so most won’t come back

I love this! I love the metaphor comparing people with disorders to animals on display at a zoo ir a circus. It really does feel like that sometimes. Great job!!!
The poem, from my point as a reader, is a strong allegory for people with mental illnesses. I like how you wrote the dehumanizing part of having to live in a society while being different from the societal norm. It feels like something that a person from the circus might write about in a journal/diary of sorts in a lyrical/poetic form. Overall, this poem is nothing short of relatable.
