CHILDHOOD
Jeff smiled as the rain pattered down outside, the torrent of thunder crackling with it. He was watching a Halloween movie in his room. The sky was husky and dark, his TV wasnât supposed to be on,  but he put it on a low volume, so that no one but him would hear.
He then curled the blanket around his body, for he was watching the movie from his bed, taking in all the mayhem and mischief flickering in front of him.
If monsters were real, then Iâd get to be myself. Nobody would say that I was âtoo creepyâ, because Iâd belong. Iâd get to be frightening all day and go on all sorts of adventures! I wouldnât have to do anything stupid ever again andâŠandâŠ
Maybe somebody would love him and want to be with him forever. He saw his Mom watching a few romance movies before, but could never understand why she even liked them, because they were all the same: A boring woman and a boring man in a boring city fell in love and did boring things together. Sure, there would be problems, but the problems were all very easy things that could have been solved with a few words, instead of being dragged out for most of the movie. Plus, there werenât any monsters or Halloween in the movies.
Why couldnât there be any romance movies with monsters or Halloween? Wouldnât that make it more fun and interesting? Jeff certainly thought so. In fact, the eleven year old boy spent his time thinking about many things, when Liu and his parents werenât annoying him. He thought about how itâd be wonderful to be a monster, he thought about what life would be like if he had friends, and when he passed by the couples in the hallways at his school, he wondered if somebody would ever look at him and say that they loved him, that they wanted to be with him forever and ever and ever. He didnât want the relationship to be anything like in the movies Mom liked, he wanted it to be as eerie as fog settling in a cemetery and  as soft as the fur of a black cat.
Liu liked to joke that Jeff would ânever find loveâ if he kept acting or dressing the way he did. It didnât bother him, usually, because he knew that it was a joke, but sometimes, he really did wonder if he was âtoo muchâ, if people would look at him and be disgusted, if heâd be destined to be alone forever, if he was the ugliest creature alive, what with his pale skin and skeletal body and slight overbite and greasy black hair and-
Thunder crackled with a flash of lightning and Jeff was brought back to the present, watching his movie, forgetting, for just a moment, the fear of never being loved.

PRESENT DAY
Jeff watched the rain patter down on the dried, brown grass that was only in small, thin patches, for the rest of the backyard was dirt, as was the front yard. The bare tree thrashed so furiously with the thunderstorm he wondered distantly if the tree would crash down and kill him and his family.
Even if it did fall down, it wouldnât matter. They werenât mortal. No, they would all just crawl out from under the tree and find some other hapless small town to terrorize.
Everyone was shut inside their houses, too afraid that theyâd get struck by lightning to step outside. Not Jeff and his magical, somewhat mysterious clown entity husband, Laughing Jack. No, they would go out and kill anyone they pleased, from those who lived alone to those who were families. Everyone was up for the taking and screams would be so loud that theyâd blend with the storm, they wouldnât be heard at all. Every night was Jeffâs favorite night, for he would feel more alive than ever with the creature he loved, the creature who understood him, who might have been even crazier than him, who knew and who cared?
Â
Their daughter, Janice, was supposed to be asleep, but if she was anything like Jeff, she would be up at night, watching the storm, her mind coming up with fantastically gruesome stories of what could or couldnât be happening. Maybe sheâd be dreaming about Halloween, about the thrill of going door-to-door and asking for saccharine-sweet treats, all dressed up in something that made her completely unrecognizable, somebody fresh, somebody new-
If sheâs anything like you, then sheâs worrying about the future. Her mind is going in circles, asking herself if sheâs loved, if sheâs doing anything right. Itâs not like you and Laughing Jack let her do the things other kids her age are doing anyway. At least you didnât have to keep your family a secret and hide your face growing up. She only has one friend and that one friend could slip away at any second. You know how these âfriendsâ are. They donât stay when youâre at your worst. You know this. Sheâs only nine, but-
But nothing! There was no use worrying about her, because she could just kill anybody who hurt her! She could slash the pain away! She could make others feel pain. There was no use to worry about her, because she was not like other children and no matter what, she would never be like other children.
He had to grab his knife and get ready to kill. Laughing Jack was probably ready to go.
The town was waiting, too.
